What Is A Misogi Event?

In the distant past, humans faced intense challenges daily simply to survive. Today, while we appreciate the wonders of the modern technology, interconnection, and unprecedented access to all of life’s comforts available to us…. We also recognize that this excess of comfort can cause complacency. Stagnancy. When the difficulty, the challenge, is removed from daily life - eventually we can become listless. In these times, we need to get back to basics and set a tough challenge for ourselves. It is through conquering challenge that we reawaken out potential and reconnect with our most important values.

At Man-Made, we call these challenges Misogis. The word misogi originates from the Japanese Shinto practice of ritual purification. Generally, water was involved. Often participants would stand under an icy waterfall, allowing the winter waters to wash away any contamination of spirit. The intense experience cleansed the mind, spirit, and body.

More recently, in today’s vernacular, a Misogi has come to mean a difficult challenge that a participant undergoes in order to cleanse themselves of complacency and achieve self-discovery. A Misogi is a mission of personal fulfillment based in self-belief. When we undertake a Misogi alongside other men working on their personal development we can all make eachother stronger and set a positive influence. One of our favorite parts of the Man-Made M3 Misogi is the sense of brotherhood between our participants and our leaders.

The Benefits of A Misogi Event

Misogi events are our passion at Man Made. These challenges are more than just physical—they are emotional, spiritual, and physiological trials masquerading as physical challenges, as Michel Easter puts it in his book, "The Comfort Crisis." Misogis must be genuinely tough, and yes, the golden rule is you cannot die during them. It's okay if you don't complete a Misogi; it's the challenge that makes it special.

While many focus on the physical benefits, there are significant mental health advantages to completing a Misogi.

A Misogi challenge:

  • enhances mental resilience

  • promotes self-discovery

  • contributes to spiritual growth

  • ultimately increasing focus and awareness
